The Lighthouse has always been the symbol of Genoa, as reflected by the presence of its image in many ancient maps and nautical charts. It stands on a promontory forty-metre high and raises up to 177 meters above sea level. The Lanterna is now the highest operational lighthouse in the Mediterranean Sea, the second highest in Europe and the third still operating oldest lighthouse (the structure we see today was built in 1543).
At the lighthouse's base there is a museum, in whose rooms you can see an exhibition on the use and function of lighthouses and maritime signaling systems.
